2016 Construction Fatality Maps:
a Reminder Why the Stand-Down Matters
Have you planned your activities for the May 8-12 National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Construction Falls? The Falls Campaign website and free Stand-Down App have everything you need to help you plan events, educate yourself, your co-workers, or employees on ways to prevent fall hazards, and raise awareness of the hazards construction workers face.
One way to raise awareness is to share the newly released 2016 Fatality Maps. We all agree that no one should have to die for their job -- but, as the map shows, far too many construction workers do. The interactive maps of construction fatalities in the U.S. are based on government sources and media reports, and do not include all fatalities in our industry. The first map includes all types of construction fatalities and the second focuses on those due to falls. Fatalities on both maps are marked with pushpins. Clicking on a pushpin reveals details about the date and circumstances of each tragedy.
In preparation for Workers' Memorial Day on April 28th and the National Stand-Down in May, we encourage you to share the map with colleagues, employees, co-workers and others to educate them about the hazards of construction work and encourage action to protect workers.

RESEARCH NEWS
Owners essential to Prevention through Design (PtD)
Prevention through Design (PtD) incorporates construction worker safety into the design stage of a building project. A CPWR-funded study, Owners' role in facilitating Prevention through Design, which appeared in the Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering and Practice, found that although some leading firms had already incorporated PtD elements into their design and construction process, most have not heard of PtD. For a one-page summary of the key findings, CLICK HERE.
