Using Research to Make Jobsites Safer
This month CPWR finishes its current cooperative agreement as NIOSH’s National Construction Center, a partnership we have had in place since 1990 and that we hope will continue. The 13 current projects have already produced materials that strengthen pre-task planning, improve safety climate, build awareness about hazards such as falls and struck-by incidents, make manual materials handling safer, help workers using epoxy resin systems, reduce fall hazards in residential construction, improve safety for workers using products with nanomaterials (pictured on the right) and highlight industry trends and data. NIOSH-funded work has also led to a range of research papers, including more than 20 Small Studies. Coming soon is guidance for choosing and using exoskeletons, strengthening mentorship for female workers, improving the OSHA 10-Hour, and more. All these materials are free and join hundreds of others from previous five-year agreements as the National Construction Center.

TOOLS FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH
Updated Guide on PPE for All Genders and Sizes
Many women, non-binary, and transgender workers in the construction industry struggle to access PPE that fits properly. CPWR’s free resource on Construction PPE for All Genders and Sizes has just added two categories: bras and maternity clothing. The guide -- which includes categories such as fall harnesses, footwear, and gloves -- is updated regularly.
New Webpage Compiles Nanomaterials Resources
CPWR has continued to develop resources to improve the safety of workers using construction products that contain nanomaterials. Those very small particles – often 1/100,000 the width of a human hair -- are being added to a wide range of products, including paints, cement, and insulation, to improve their properties. CPWR’s guidance and research are all available on a new page that compiles links to websites, Toolbox Talks, research papers, and materials from other organizations.
Sign Up for a Newsletter on Preventing Deaths from Suicide and Opioids
The next edition of NABTU and CPWR’s newsletter to help the construction industry prevent suicides and deaths from opioids -- REASON (Resources and Effective programs Addressing Suicides and Opioids Now) -- will be coming out later this month. REASON provides comprehensive solutions, important research, and free resources that highlight these issues and the positive steps being taken to address them. Read the first issue and subscribe now; you can also see CPWR’s extensive collection of materials on these topics.

Prevention Through Design Workshop: “Education, Training, & Legislation – Where do we go from here?”
Arizona State University’s 2024 Prevention through Design workshop, taking place August 27 in Washington, D.C., will combine legislation, training, and education themes with the aim to propel safety design principles and their adoption by design and construction professionals. An international roster of outstanding speakers from academia and industry will share their vision, knowledge, and experiences, and participants will take part in expert-facilitated breakout sessions to explore how to enhance PtD capabilities through training and the implications of PtD legislation. The workshop offers extensive networking opportunities and provides Continuing Education Credits. Learn more, including how to register, on the workshop’s webpage.
