Demographics of Business Owners
A better understanding of construction firm owner demographics allows us to better understand the industry and associated economic growth, as well as how to reach owners with prevention efforts.
In addition, understanding owners may provide information that could be used to improve recruitment and retention of construction workers as the need for construction workers grows. For example, it has been found that minority-owned firms are more likely to hire minorities.
This interactive dashboard highlights data trends for demographics of owners for both employer and nonemployer construction firms. The Year and/or Employer Type filter(s) update both the charts and the bolded and underlined key findings.
Following the interactive dashboard, you will find more information on the data source, definitions, a downloadable data file, and recommended citation. This interactive data dashboard corresponds to a chapter in the upcoming PDF version of the Construction Chart Book-7th edition, which will be published this summer. Data will be updated annually as available. If you have any questions or comments, please email [email protected].
About the Data
Data come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey and the Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics. Owner demographic information was previously obtained using the Survey of Business Owners (SBO), which was stopped after the 2012 survey year.

- The Annual Business Survey uses the collection year when referenced by the U.S. Census Bureau. For example, 2022 Annual Business Survey data covers 2021 data. Years shown on this page are for the reference year, not data collection year.
